What would your life look like if you let love lead the way?
Get really honest with yourself.
Would you still be doing the same work, would you be surrounded by the same people, would you be living in the same home, city, country...?
If you said yes to all of those questions then you're obviously already letting your beautifully robust heart lead the way.
But most of us have some unbridled fear that gets in the way of our heart's desires, preventing us from actualizing the life we were born to live. Which is just part of being human, fear is built into our DNA, we can't avoid it.
Instead we have to grab hold of it, stare it down and say, I see you fear, but I am not you, I am love, and then turn your attention towards all that is good in your life, towards all that your heart is desiring, towards the dreams that are burning in your soul. Just let that fear pass right on by.
Do this as many times as you need to throughout the day. Everyday. The more you choose love, the less fear will stampede your life. Because every time you choose to follow your heart you are conquering your fears, you are reining them in, and growing in strength and fortitude at the same time.
The challenge is that fear is often masked, it's a trickster, it likes to disguise itself as safety and security, among other things. And our hearts are often laced with trauma, wounds that act like shadows for fear to hide in.
So how do we know when it's our heart or our fear guiding us?
This is one of the questions I get asked most often. I wish there was a simple answer, maybe there is and I just haven't come across it yet.
Here's what I've learned so far, if you want to unmask fear and clear the shadows veiling your heart's wisdom, you have to confront them one by one by stepping into the discomfort rather than shying away.
You have to become best friends with courage.
In Brené Brown's words, “The root of the word courage is cor – the Latin word for heart. In one of its earliest forms, the word courage meant, To speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart."
So the real work is to get to know your heart, all the deep dark facets of it, uncover them and bring them into the light by loving and accepting yourself exactly as you are. Your self-love is the greatest gift you can offer the world. In loving every aspect of yourself you are clearing away all those veiled shadows, you're illuminating the uniqueness of your being and stepping into the brilliance of your essence.
So I'll ask you again, what would your life look like if you let love lead the way?
Contemplate this for a moment...
How quickly did fear show up? Did you rationalize yourself out of something you have a burning desire for? Did you catastrophize an outcome, ex: I can't leave my relationship, I'll never find someone again, or I can't quit my job, I'll end up homeless. FYI that's fear trying to take hold of your life.
Trust, my friends, is the only way to the deepest parts of your heart. Trusting in the unknown, in the mystery, in the yet uncharted territories of your deepest Self. Keeping in mind that Trusting does not mean you won't be confronted with challenges.
To quote Brené Brown again, "If we are going to put ourselves out there and love with our whole hearts, we're going to experience heartbreak. If we're going to try new, innovative things, we're going to fail. If we're going to risk caring and engaging, we're going to experience disappointment".
But this is when life gets really good! Because when you rise up from the failures and the challenges you've courageously moved through, your heart beams brighter, your intuition gets stronger, your capacity to give and receive love grows. Life gets better!
So if you're willing to Trust in the mystery - in the unknown, what changes would you make in your life? What would you do differently today? Forget about the rational mind for a minute, just shut that shit down, and listen to your heart.
The heart speaks through emotions, to hear it you'll need to feel your way into it. Emotions are fluid, they move through the body (e-motion = energy in motion). Sometimes we grab hold of an emotion, clinging to it, which creates imbalances, stagnancy, discomfort, and disease. Practice allowing them to flow through you without getting attached or creating a story, just surrender to the feeling.
If you feel disconnected from your feelings you can tune into the sensations in your body, breathe into them until you start to feel an emotional release. This will bring more awareness to your heart's wisdom.
If you need a little help getting into your body and out of your mind, try this five minute exercise:
ACTIVATE YOUR HEART
Sit in a comfortable position somewhere quiet.
Close your eyes and rest one hand on the center of your chest and the other hand on your low belly.
Now inhale deeply through the nose, feeling your hands rising, then exhale with a gentle sigh through the mouth, letting all your air go.
Do this five times.
On your fifth exhale lower your hands to your lap. Keep your eyes closed, keep breathing deeply, in and out through the nose, close your mouth.
Take five more intentional breaths like this.
Then bring the palms of your hands together and rest your thumbs on your heart center in the middle of your chest.
Take five more breaths like this, with your attention on the sensation of your hands gently pressing into your chest, breathe into that place.
As you exhale visualize radiating the energy or the sensation of your heart center throughout your entire body.
Lower your hands to your lap, keep your eyes closed and bring your awareness to your body, FEEL it, tune into whatever arises with your senses, not your mind, allow whatever thoughts arise to just pass on by and bring your attention back to how your body FEELS.
Stay like this for as long as you like. If you find you have a lot of thoughts coming up, write them out. Purge your mind and heart into a journal, it'll help you clear out the congestion or confusion of your mind.
Do this every day for a week.

This past year has been a particularly intense growing season for me, forcing me to my knees more times than I can count, sometimes in total agony, other times in complete awe and reverence for the magic that is so beautifully laced into everything.
Through it, what has become really clear to me is that the more I direct my attention towards my heart - towards love, the less my mind, my fear, my limiting beliefs, my negative patterns get in the way.
I have officially handed the reins of my life over to my heart, I am surrendering to its call, feeling my way into each moment, the brutal and the beautiful.
I am surrendering to love.
